Perhaps you are interested in learning how to beatmatch. Or maybe you have no interest in learning this skill at all? Irregardless, it is a good idea to purchase a DJ controller that has the capability should you want to learn how at some point. Knowing how to beatmatch is always a great skill to have as a DJ. By the end of this article, you will know what you need in a DJ controller and will be able to make a well-informed purchase.

When you are researching controllers, check out this list of DJ controllers compared so that you can easily find those that match with the features you desire.

  1. Requirements for beatmatching. There are a few things that are required in order for you to be able to beatmatch. You will need a control platform that has knobs, buttons, jog wheels, and faders that provide hands-on control. In addition, you will need an audio interface. Finally, you will need a great software package but this can be chosen after you purchase a controller.

  1. Build quality is important. Often times DJs travel for work and they need equipment that can take the abuse of being transported from gig to gig. You will want to make sure that the controller you use is made of high-quality materials and is not flimsy. It would be a nightmare to show up to a club to find out that one of your knobs has gone missing.

  1. Layout. Sometimes the layout can make or break your decision to purchase. The layout of a controller is important. If you find it to be confusing and not user-friendly, you will likely get frustrated and not end up using it. Worse yet, you may quit DJing all together, or you may not want to continue out of frustration. The layout needs to be easy for you to understand and maneuver throughout while you play.

  1. Software. After you have chosen a controller, you will need to select a software program that will coincide with the model you purchased. While using software is not a must, it is a smart and efficient way to make music. When you are shopping for a controller, it is a good idea to find out what type of software will work best.

  1. All-in-one vs. modular. Finally, the most important decision you will have to make other than purchasing a software package is the type of controller that will work best for you. A modular allows you to create the control system by purchasing separate items. These items include but are not limited to a CD player, hi-fi and amp, and radio. All-in-one controllers are what many choose as everything you need is in one machine. It is important to note you may need to invest in a sound card depending on the type of music you want to play. While it seems like the no-brainer choice is to purchase an all-in-one, you will still need to work with it to get it set up exactly how you want it.
