How Music Can Help You as a Student

Typically, music is seen as being a distraction to studying, and students are often advised to conduct their learning and revision in a quiet environment free from anything that may distract their focus from their work. However, research suggests that listening to music when studying may not be as bad as you think. While studying for your online MBA degree from Rutgers Online, studying from home all the time could easily become tough on you. Could music help you to get better grades?

Listen to Music You Enjoy:

Studies have shown that listening to music that you enjoy can actually improve your cognition, which in turn will lead to improved focus and better concentration while you are studying. So, investing in some Bluetooth speakers or some noise canceling headphones and compiling a playlist of your favorite tunes could be a great way to spend some time when preparing for your masters of business administration online degree. Of course, be careful about the volume – music that’s too loud could end up being a distraction.

Listen to Classical Music:

Classical music got a lot of coverage by the media as apparently being able to improve our IQ, leading to parents buying Mozart music for their babies to listen to. However, although this idea has since been debunked by further studies, there is some evidence that listening to classical music can increase your cognition and focus. So, if you’ve never listened to classical music before, this could be a great opportunity for you to get to know a new music genre and explore something different.

Music for Break Time:

Perhaps you’ve tried listening to music or studying and found that you’re more focused on tapping along to the beat or singing along to the lyrics than you are on the work that needs to be done. If this is the case, then silent study sessions are going to be more ideal for you, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot benefit from listening to music when you take a break. Taking regular short breaks is recommended for focus and concentration levels, and listening to music during your breaks can lift your mood and motivate you.

Calm Stress with Music:

Many people turn to music as a refuge at times when they are emotional. If you are feeling happy, then you may play an upbeat and cheerful tune, whereas when feeling sad, you might turn to something more slow and melancholy. Rock and metal music has often been associated with angry emotions and feelings of not fitting in. If you’re feeling stressed out and anxious with your studies, music can be used as an accompaniment to meditation or as a means of focusing on something else to help you regain control.

If you enjoy listening to music, make sure to involve it when studying for your degree. Listening to certain types of music can help to improve your focus, help you get the most out of breaks, and even enable you to gain better control over your stress.
