Once upon a time and happily ever after, and the annual Valentine's Day tradition is upon us. What do you get this year? Flowers is the obvious choice but definitely not the only. When it comes to flowers though, how do you pick from where to get? Or, more importantly, how long does it take them to arrive? While BloomThat offers next day delivery, they are also stirring the pot with same day delivery for sections of three areas across the country. Imagine getting flowers delivered just ninety minutes after you order them. With a crew of bicycle couriers, you can get quick delivery to certain sections of New York City (parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn), the Bay Area (San Francisco to San Jose), and Los Angeles (from Venice to Los Feliz). Dubbed the Uber of flowers, you can order them right through their iPhone app (sorry Android users, nothing there yet). It will be nice to see them come to the Boston area, but I had to rely on their next day delivery.
Instead of offering a constant set of arrangements, BloomThat provides an evolving menu of flowers, keeping their offerings small but fresh. This keeps the quality up where local florists don't just get orders on the lowest bid from your typical search optimized flower delivery network.
Ordering from BloomThat was quicker and easier than other florists I've ordered from. I did have to laugh about some of the pre-written notes you can include with the flowers. I don't think my wife appreciated the note as much as I had fun sending it.
The bloom received was their Jaymes bouquet, at $72 + shipping. What we received looks pretty close to what is shown on their site, with the biggest difference being the flowers haven't bloomed just yet. My wife did like the flowers, as she's a big fan of white roses. Everything looked very fresh. If you look at the top picture, there is that one leaf hanging a little low though. Otherwise, a great match and seemed to be priced competitively to similar offerings elsewhere, considering size and number of flowers.
Besides flowers, they do try to up sell you with things like plants, cookies, and t-shirts, among other items. And, the delivery charge can add another $10-$30 or possibly more in different cities depending upon location and day of week. But, I do like the limited selection model to keep inventory fresh and rotating, keeping the delivery product quality high, lasting longer once delivered. Our bloom looks as fresh as the day it was delivered, with some of the roses blooming a bit more than before.
Being an early-stage company in a very competitive market drives one to wonder how long they will last. If they can keep up the consistency shown in my order, they should do well. I do like the quick, local delivery model, but that won't scale to everywhere, and isn't local to me yet. They do have an interesting slate of investors, though, including former San Francisco 49ers QB Joe Montana, actor Ashton Kutcher, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, among many others.
