Night Stars Landscape Lighting Celebration Series Light Up Your Heart Valentines's Day Giveaway

Discover the Dinosaurs Raffle

I made a comment in my show review about passing up on the raffle at the Discover the Dinosaurs show, and it hard to not enter. I didn't realize it at the time but I had pocketed a couple of the entry forms, I guess with the hope of filling them out later and returning to enter.

After seeing the back of the forms, I'm now glad I didn't enter. Those who enter get on the phone/mailing list of La Dolce Vita Marketing. No thanks. Not interested in your vacation ownership plans, aka timeshares.

Dish DVR with Slingbox

Okay, so I wasn't in Las Vegas last week for the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where all the latest and greatest gadgets got introduced. I was however watching the press releases though and saw some interesting things come out. For instance, I doubt anyone is really interested in four times the resolution TVs with 4K TV. What did surprise me the most was a little a incident with c|net.

If you're not familiar with CNET, it is a technology publication which does product reviews, big time, along with technology news and software downloads. They decided to nominate some products for best of CES, as one might expect from such a big time show. There were lots of press releases and most people can't read them all. The staff at CNET did. One of the products CNET liked was a product from Dish, the satellite TV folks.

Dish has a product out now called Hopper that is their version of a Tivo DVR, with a few extra features. It offers PrimeTime Any Time (PTAT), which records all the big networks' prime time shows and saves them for a few days. The device's Hopper name comes from an AutoHop feature, which automatically skips over the commercials. CBS is suing them for this feature. Oh yeah, did I mention CNET is owned by CBS.

What Dish introduced at CES was the next version of the Hopper. They added a Slingbox to it. If you're not familiar with the Slingbox, it allows you to place shift your TV watching, similar to how Tivo and the DVR introduced time-shifting to TV watching. So, over your Internet connection, you can watch something on your home DVR from anywhere with an Internet connection. It is a fantastic idea. I bought one of the original Slingbox devices, literally the first day they went on sale. I used it to watch home TV while traveling overseas for work. It was great. Another feature of the new Hopper device allows copying shows to an iPhone/iPad, but that didn't really matter in the big picture of things.

And, here is where the problems started. CBS didn't like CNET nominating someone for a best of show award who they were suing, even if the product was great. According to this Bloomberg piece: CBS has told CNET’s staff it must disqualify Dish from getting an award at the show. And they added to the review article: “The Dish Hopper with Sling was removed from consideration due to active litigation involving our parent company CBS Corp. We will no longer be reviewing products manufactured by companies with which we are in litigation with respect to such product.” It is like YouTube removing all the Viacom videos due to that lawsuit...

Talk about editorial independence.

And now, the Streisand effect comes into play. If you're not familiar with that, Barbra sued to suppress photos of her home from being spread across the Internet. The suit didn't suppress their dissemination. Instead, it had the unintended consequence of spreading them even further and faster. Instead of hiding the photos, now everyone saw them. And, that is what is happening with Dish's new device. Instead of the announcement being buried in the sea of press releases from the show, people are talking about the product getting pulled from consideration. Instead of editorial independence at CNET, one must now take anything they consider as best of breed with a grain of salt. Is there something better out there that couldn't be named because of the whims of CBS?

If I could use the Dish network, I definitely would be interested in this new device. Unfortunately, I can't get a clear line of site to the satellites. It sounds like a great addition to the DVR. Hopefully, Tivo will license the technology and add it to their DVRs. (Dish owns Slingbox now.)

Does anyone even know who ended up winning best of show? Right... already forgotten. But not the Dish device.

Family Science Days - Boston

American Association for the Advancement of Science
Fresh off the Discover the Dinosaur exhibit, Family Science Days is coming to Boston in February. This free event is February 16th and 17th at the Hynes Convention Center. As part of the annual meeting for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the organization provides two days to "browse interactive tabletop exhibits, learn about cool science jobs, and have your questions answered by experts."
According to the description of the event, other activities include the following:
  • Dig for artifacts
  • Paint with bacteria
  • Trick your brain
  • Explore nanotechnology in everyday objects
  • Tour the universe
  • Meet cool scientists
  • And much, much more!
Sounds great, but.... As the event is geared more towards grades 6 to 12, I think it is a little too old for us, but it still sounds like a good time if your kids are the right age.

Discover the Dinosaurs: Post Show Review

Okay, last weekend was the Discover the Dinosaurs show in Boston. My earlier article seemed to be a popular place, so I thought I would review our visit. My wife and I took our five year old there. Five and a half if you ask him. He'll be six next week... Here's my rundown of the show.
The show was in town for just three days. I didn't buy tickets beforehand so when we arrived at the Seaport World Trade Center the ticket line was out the door and down the street. The long line was a start of a common theme for the day. While waiting on line, a woman and her son asked to get through to the Dunkin Donuts on the other side, which she said was a reward for not having to wait on the line inside for something he wanted. At that point, I started to buy tickets on my phone while still waiting. The phone tickets went through smoothly and we left the first line to get on the line to get inside. Very good move to buy the tickets that way. Easily saved 20-30 minutes I'd say.

Once inside, you go through this grand Jurassic Journey entrance. After the entrance, there were forms to fill out for a Universal Park trip sweepstakes and a scavenger hunt quiz pickup for the kids. My son quickly moved on towards the "museum-quality" dinosaurs, of which there were supposedly over sixty on exhibit. No time for the sweepstakes. I toyed with the idea of grabbing a form to fill out later and find some way to return to the entrance but decided against it. The exit was elsewhere so we wouldn't be going through there again. Yes, it was hard to pass up entering for the trip.

Once past the entrance area, the display of the animated dinosaurs started. They moved and roared loudly. If you have a kid who doesn't like loud noises, this was not the place to be. Some dinosaurs were huge, some smaller. Each exhibit area had multiple dinosaurs in them, usually one really large one and several smaller ones, but that wasn't always the case.
For the first two or three exhibit areas, my son spent an extended period of time at them. After the third or fourth one, he spent barely a minute at each, just to name the dinosaur type. Some areas had buttons to press to trigger the movement / interactions, but many just were animated on their own. Even with the buttons to slow things down a little, they were always in action.
I quoted the "museum-quality" descriptor before because that is their word choice describing the exhibits. In my opinion, these aren't museum quality. I don't recall ever seeing the quality of these dinosaurs in any museum. The only place I might see something like this is a ride at Disney or Universal. Museums are more for the unanimated bones, nothing really loud and animated. There were some of the motionless bones around which you could touch and take your picture with, but it was difficult to get a clear shot of them without having to wait an extended period of time to not have someone else in the picture with your child. And our child had no interest (yet) of waiting around.

Getting through the area with all the animated dinosaurs took a whopping twenty minutes. That was the end of the free area. While we could always go back through the area and look again, we never returned except to walk through to other areas.

More than half the hall was dedicated to other things, almost all of which weren't free. The two things I saw which were free were a coloring area and a non-stop playing of some animated movies, which offered some seating. No interest in either from my son.

The first place we stopped at next was the gift shop. They had your show t-shirts, stuffed dinosaurs, dinosaur figures, dinosaur games, and plenty of other dinosaur-related goodies. The prices here weren't unreasonable, surprisingly. However, the line to buy anything wrapped around the whole store and nearly went out the store entrance. There was no way we were waiting in that line. I can see why that other woman and her son ended up at Dunkin Donuts.

The line my son was interested in was for the bounce houses. They were huge with obviously huge dinosaurs, or the like, on top. At first, I thought this was free, but I quickly found out otherwise. Leaving my wife and son on that line, I went to the ticket buying line.
The ticket line went surprisingly fast. They offered a $20 ride all you want bracelet or $2/ticket pricing. The bounce houses were 4 tickets or $8. The bracelet didn't include all the activities though. The face painting and mining activities were priced separately. Most activities were $6 or $8 each, where the face painting depended upon the type of painting done. I only bought enough tickets for the inflatables. After seeing that line, I wasn't expecting our son to last to even ride that once so I wasn't going to buy more tickets. If he did last, I could always get more if necessary.

After getting the tickets and returning to the family, I decided to check out the line we were waiting on a little more. It literally went the length of half the building, and then wrapped back and forth five times. All that to bounce for ten minutes, which explained why the line moved in bits and spurts. We waited over an hour before it was time to play, becoming instant friends with the family in front of us.

During the wait, I went to grab some food at the snack bar. We had eaten beforehand but wanted some munchies. The line moved quickly but they had run out of everything due to the size of the crowd. No french fries, no pizza, no fresh fruit cup, not much of anything. I grabbed a couple hot dogs and a soft pretzel for $12, $4 each, just to get something.

After our ten minutes of fun, it was time to move on. While leaving the bounce house area, we overheard a dad asking his kids if they wanted to go again (having to wait another hour). I thought he was nuts. For the most part, our son had a good time bouncing around and sliding but was done and not really interested in doing anything else. So, we left, passing the turn in area for the scavenger hunt on the way out. If you finished the hunt quiz correctly, you got to spin a wheel to get a prize. I didn't see what the prizes were so I can't comment on them, but that was one place without a line.

The other activities not mentioned include miniature golf and some dinosaur rides. There were maybe a half dozen holes to the golf course and there were four stationary rocking dinos for the 42" and over crowd. The rides just didn't look that exciting, apart from a good picture opportunity.

Overall, it was an expensive day. The tickets cost $52. $17/adult, $12/child, and a $3 online fee. Parking in Boston was $20. Food cost $12. Bounce house cost $8. For a total of  $92.

We spent a total of only about two hours in the exhibit hall, but our son really enjoyed the place. We hadn't told him where we were going beforehand so he was surprised when we got there. Would we do it again? Sure. Just be prepared to wait and keep your wallet open.

Amazon AutoRip Goes Live

Amazon launched their AutoRip service today. Basically when you purchase an AutoRip CD, you'll also get the MP3 versions of the songs free, too. You'll find the MP3 versions in the Amazon Cloud Player.

Not only will this work for any newly purchased albums from them, but they'll go back through your purchase history and provide MP3s for ANY album you've purchased from them, back until 1998, that is available as an AutoRip CD. Basically, Amazon has licenses in place with some of the major record labels, but not all. If the album happens to be from one of them, you at least have a chance its available. It covers about 50,000 CDs, not their entire catalog. so, don't be surprised if you don't see a CD available. Do be surprised if you bought something 15 years ago and forgot all about it.

After books, CDs were the first other item they sold way back when.

Initial opinions are positive here. While I didn't buy any new music to try out, having easy access to the old music was great, even if I already converted the music to MP3 files. I did discover I hadn't really bought many physical music CDs on Amazon. Much more in the only digital formats, already available in the cloud player.

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 App on Android Gives Rewards

The newest version of the app for Android adds a rewards program. While they do have an ad-free premium version, this feature is in the free version. (It is probably in the ad-free version, too, but I'm not paying to find out... :)

You can earn 5 points for a daily tap in, along with 25 points for a welcome. Add to that 20 points for 5 dictionary searches / day, 20 points for 5 thesaurus searches, 25 points for adding as a homescreen widget, 15 points for adding a word to your favorites list, and more, you can see how points will add up. There is also a leveling mechanism where if you do enough achievements you advance in levels and get bonuses. Each bonus will open up a new letter of the alphabet in the dictionary. (just kidding there)

Lastly, you can then turn these into gift cards, enter to win BIG prizes, or donate them to charity. Typically, the conversion rate is 1,000 points for $1 of gift card, like Amazon, McDonald's,  ProFlowers, Fandango, and several others.

I like the voice recognition in the app. Should be great for people who can't spell.

Free Depends

I can't believe Wes Welker of the New England Patriots is actually a spokesperson for this but...  Head over to for the Great American Try On and get yourself a free sample.

Cinemark: FREE Popcorn

There is only one Cinemark in all of Massachusetts, but if you happen to live near one and plan on going to the movies this weekend... check out their Facebook page to pickup a coupon for a free small popcorn with the purchase of a large fountain drink. Offer is valid through 1/16/13.

Zip Code Wedding

Who needs to have a wedding on 10/10/10 or 11/11/11 or even 12/12/12 when you can have a wedding on your zip code... or so Cheryl Bennett thought. Being from Amesbury, Mass with a zip code of 01913, today's the day. I feel sorry for her fiancé, now husband, Steve DeLong. If he ever forgets their anniversary, boy is he in trouble.

I guess since there will be no 13/13/13 weddings this year, if you like numbers, what else can you do...

Ban the "R" Word

Thanks to Love That Max, I noticed that New York City will be proposing legislation today to ban the use of "mentally retarded" from official documents. Great news, though I'm not sure why the naming didn't change with the passing of S7889 for New York state back in 2010.

I was curious where Massachusetts stands on this and discovered they passed a similar law back in 2010: H.4922: An Act eliminating the word ‘retardation’ from the general laws.

Amazing the comments some people post on such a subject over at the CBS NY article.

Take the pledge.

Free Starbucks Blonde Roast

Okay, I don't drink coffee but I saw this deal on the Starbuck's Facebook page and thought I would share. If you share the offer with a friend, you'll get an eGift card for the equivalent price of one tall cup of brewed Blonde Roast, valued up to $2.60.

Current Giveaway Summary, as of 1/7/13

Just a summary of current giveaways I'm involved in, in case you missed any...
The only giveaway that is just from me is the $10 iTunes gift card giveaway. That runs until 1/23/13.

Frugal Follies is celebrating their 3rd anniversary and we're helping them give away a $103 Amazon gift card. 1/31/13 ending here.

You can win a Blacktop 360 Party Hub Grill-Fryer along with the Make Our Own Network (MOON) group. This goes until 1/18. Yeah, the picture says the 17th but it looks like it is scheduled to the 18th.

My personal favorite current giveaway is the Ryobi Drill Kit, with four winners even. This ends on 1/12/13.

Lastly is the giveaway for $200 credit at Tophatter, in the form of PayPal. This runs until 1/30/13.

I don't know what's up with the Headphones/iPod: and Kureg Vue V700 giveaways. Both should have started by now. I know the MyCube Safe one has been delayed.
