Nowadays, there are all kinds of these of the Month Club subscriptions. GlobeIn is one such service. Instead of food though, they offer rare artisan wares from remote regions of the globe.

When you subscribe, you pick the theme of the box you are after, and GlobeIn will then source products for you from regional artists. Each box will include up to three items. And, along with each item, you get the story of the artisan and a thank you card.

Besides the subscription box service, you can also explore the wares of the different Artisans directly. To help you narrow down the search to what most interests you, pick the appropriate Artisan items you like from a presented set. You also pick continents you want to visit so that the wares from Artisans local to those regions are highlighted first.

When I used to travel more frequently with the job, I always hunted out local wares as souvenirs. They provided a unique reminder of the trip that a pair of mouse ears or a t-shirt just can't do.
