British Rock Band Flicker CD Review and Giveaway

Flicker Album Cover

I recently had the opportunity to review the debut music CD for British progressive rock group Flicker, "How Much Are You Willing to Forget." It was pitched as likening to early Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead, 1980s music. Having grown up in that era, I thought I'd give the CD a try. Now, having listened to it, I got more of a David Bowie kind of feel, like Space Oddity almost.

The CD is made up of nine tracks with a total length of just over 50 minutes (50:16). Listen as you read the rest of the review, before entering the giveaway to win your own copy at the end.

Flicker is a quartet, currently made up of vocalist/guitarist Ellis Mordecai, his brother Vaughan Abrey on drums, guitarist Andrew Day, with bassist Peter Coussens. The songs on the album consist of strong vocals from Ellis with lengthy musical interludes presenting that psychedelic prog feel. Of the songs, I couldn't pinpoint which might end up being a blockbuster single. Several are good and definitely worthy of some radio play.

Many of the songs had various highlights. I liked the intro guitar melody of "Go" with its many riffs. "Counting Time" offers Eillis' vocals and an almost symphonic feel. "
Out There" on the other hand starts with a piano and runs with it into a more guitar-centric tune.

On the flip side, I'm not keen on songs that run for 7-8+ minutes, unless you're Bohemian Rhapsody. Sometimes the instrumental sections felt the same from song to song.

Overall, not a bad album for an up and coming British prog rock group. I probably wouldn't have bought this had I just saw it on the shelf at the local Newbury Comics. Now that I own it, though, I'll listen when I'm looking for something with a more mellow feel when I'm winding down for the day.
