What is Vine?

Twitter recently released a new service called Vine that seems to be getting quite a bit of press due to some porn issues. An editor accidentally flagged some porn content as editor's choice, so the NSFW (Not Safe For Work) video appeared at the top of the recommended list. I thought I would do a quick post on what exactly Vine is for those who haven't run across it yet.

First, if you're not familiar with Twitter, it allows you to post short text messages of 140 characters. In a nutshell, what Twitter offers with Vine is the same thing but with video. 6 second videos to be exact. And, for now, only on iOS devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch. That's really it.

Each 6 second video loops repeatedly in the regular app. Multiple apps are coming out that extend this basic functionality and replay what is posted to Vine on non-iOS devices. Vinepeek runs a constant unmoderated feed of what is posted, while VineRoulette allows you to enter a tag to monitor and see all that is posted.

Facebook apparently doesn't like Vine. In their long battle with Twitter, they are now blocking the friend finding feature of the app.
