Martians Invade Vegas Watch Giveaway, Exp 1/14/13

Win a Martian Watch

Who would't love a $250 Bluetooth-capable watch. Bluetooth on a watch you may ask? Well, yes. You pair your watch with your phone and it acts as a microphone, with a directional personal speaker so you don't have to wear a headset. It supposedly offers two hours of talk time and 7 days of standby before you have to recharge it with your USB cable or power adapter.

The Martian watch is being revealed at the upcoming Computer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas and then there is a giveaway that ends on January 14th, where someone in the US, 18+ can win. All you have to do is Like their page and give them your email to enter. See the official rules for details.

Film Metro Offers On The Road Movie Screening

Monday, January 14th there is a Boston screening for the R-rated movie On The Road. Showing at the AMC Boston Common on Tremont at 7 pm, you can still reserve your tickets.

Here is a movie synopsis from the Film Metro site to help you see if you are interested:
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles and based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac, ON THE ROAD tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Traveling cross-country, Sal and Dean venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” -- the pure essence of experience. Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women -- Bull (Viggo Mortensen), Camille (Kirsten Dunst), Carlo (Tom Sturridge), Jane (Amy Adams), Terry (Alice Braga), Galatéa (Elisabeth Moss) – each impacting their journey indelibly.
They also have screenings for Hyde Park on Hudson and Promised Land. However, those two aren't being screen in the Boston area. Instead, they have screenings in Florida.

Lamb Jam Boston 2013

I've never heard of this before but I think I just might have to go, the 2013 Boston Lamb Jam. 18 area chefs (12 Boston area, 3 Providence, and 3 Portland) will serve their best lamb dishes. They'll also have local breweries represented and wine to boot. I'm not a big fan of the local wines so I'm hoping those are not local, but perhaps they can change my mind, if they are.

The show is February 17th, 2013 from 3-6 pm at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge. Tickets are $50 through the end of the year (today) and $60 thereafter. Buy four tickets today and get a free t-shirt, too. There is even a $75 pre-party VIP hour ticket option. Due to the alcohol offered, the show is a 21 and over only event.

I couldn't find any Yelp reviews for the Boston show, but the San Francisco lamb show reviews were informative.

Here is a butcher demo from last year, breaking down a whole lamb.

While I've seen chicken, cow, and goat broken down, I don't think I've ever seen lamb before. So tasty.

Somewhat related...

The folks at are offering a two week pass to HealthWorks Fitness Centers for Women. Locations are in the Back Bay, Coolidge Corner, Chestnut Hill, and Cambridge.

And, if you sign up for their e-licious newsletter, you'll be entered to win two tickets to a City Wine tour.

RoboForm Review

I've been a sweepstaker for years now. I feel like I've almost always done it, entering contests nearly everywhere I see a form to fill out, offline as well as online. In 2006, I starting doing it on a more serious level, or at least started tracking my wins for the first time. I've never won a car nor a trip, nor the HGTV Dream House, maybe 2013 for that last one since it just started again, but I have gotten some decent wins. Value wise, my biggest win was a Bowflex from the NFL Network. Usage wise, I've gotten the most usage from a Sony camera I got back in 2007. Well, technically, I won a PlayStation, but I traded that for the camera. The art of the trade for all those items I really didn't want but won after I entered anyways (or I won lesser prize than desired). Plenty of gifts to go around, too, for birthdays and Christmas. And lots of useless digital wallpaper, too.

The slowest part of entering sweepstakes, apart from finding the right ones (thanks Sweepstakes Advantage), is entering in your contact information. While I'm a very quick typist and the auto fill feature of browsers has gotten better, I've been a user of RoboForm for years to more quickly fill out sweeping forms accurately, and for remembering passwords. Lately, RoboForm has been most often discussed as a secure way to simplify web site logins. You remember the one password for RoboForm, and then RoboForm fills in the site login information when you're on the appropriate site. You don't have to remember your username and password for individual sites and you can use really strong passwords, perhaps randomly generated by RoboForm, without fear of forgetting them. No more using the same password on multiple sites with something like that.

On top of the password login feature, RoboForm is, as its name may imply, an automatic way to fill out forms, and not just login forms. With just a touch of a toolbar button, your name, address, and phone number are all filled out for you, almost always in the right places. And, that is where RoboForm shines better than a browser's auto fill component. It will fill out more forms more accurately in more places than your favorite browser's auto fill feature. And, that allows you to enter in more sweepstakes more quickly, in the hopes of winning more prizes. Which is exactly why I've been using it for so many years.

If you frequently use public computers, there is also RoboForm2Go. This runs RoboForm directly from a USB thumb drive. Meaning all your contacts, passwords, and bookmarks travel with you on the USB drive, and there is nothing to install once you get to the public system. If instead you just happen to use multiple computers, all of which are yours and aren't public (laptop/desktop, home/work), RoboForm also has a Automatic Sync feature which keeps the retained passwords in sync across multiple machines. Add a new site on one machine and the next time the other computer syncs up, RoboForm will copy over the new information saved off from the other system. You'll occasionally be asked to deal with sync issues like if you happen to add a new site to both systems, but they're easy to deal with.  It uses AES 256 for military grade encryption of your password data, and keeps a backup of your data online.

RoboForm is free to try for 30 days. Then if you like it, the cost is $19.95 for a one year subscription, with a current special of $9.95. This covers all your systems, not just one. It is dubbed RoboForm Everywhere and runs on Windows, Mac, and mobile (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry). Hmm, perhaps it is time to give the mobile version a try. Never thought about that. Definitely worth a try. Browser-wise, it works with IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. For Linux users, there is a Firefox extension you can use, as there is not a native installer.

Whenever I get a new machine, RoboForm is one of the first things I install on it. If you've never tried it, give it a go, especially with the 30-day trial available. You won't be disappointed and may have a new best friend.

Here's a demo that shows how this award-winning tool works:

Free Ringling Bros. Circus Ticket (No Expiration)

I don't remember where I first heard about this but in case you don't know, you can get a free ticket to the circus for your newborn. You don't have to go to the circus when they are a newborn, but if you contact Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey in the first year after their birth, they'll send you a certificate to use later to take the child to their first circus. The Baby Program FAQ explains all the details. This works for adoptions, too, regardless of age at adoption, as long as ticket request comes in first year after adoption. If you have multiples, check for any special handling. See the Tour Map for when they'll be in your area. No plans for Boston at this time, though I don't know if I remember where I put our certificate.

Upcoming Giveaways

I've signed up for a bunch of shared blogger giveaways and thought I would summarize all that are coming. It may seem like quite a few, but I actually have passed on some where I didn't think the product was right for the audience I was after. So far, I've only signed up for those with free entries. As a new blog, they seem like the best way to get the word out that I'm here (besides my own giveaways and good content). Over time, I suspect I'll go for some of the pay only entries. I'm already eyeing a couple and may sign up after the new year.

The dates are estimated launch dates, with probable end dates when available. Links are either to my announcement pages or signup pages if no announcement page was required.
Okay, I really have signed up for quite a few. Didn't realize it was that many... :) Yeah, the peanut butter one does kind of stand out a little there... We go through alot in this house. The rest are all money or some kind of piece of equipment (toy, kitchen, grill, hardware).

Look for my own giveaway coming soon for some coupons for Michael Angelo's lasagna as part of their Taste & Tell Family program. No blind taste tests, but I'm working on a product review there.

Know of any other giveaways you think might fit in here? Please let me know.

Listia Review

Listia Logo
Do you have stuff you don't need but don't want to deal with the eBay/PayPal fees to sell over there or don't want to sell/giveaway on Craigslist or FreeCycle? I've been using a relatively new site, Listia, that allows you to do just that. The site started in 2009, but really only recently had enough users to make it more worthwhile. Without users, you don't really get a fair value for an item.

The way the site works is you give away your stuff for free, where the buyer bids with credits. You then in turn use those credits for what others are giving away. When selling an item, shipping could be free (out of your pocket) or the buyer pays. Obviously, with free shipping, the bidding tends to go higher. It is a great place to pickup craft items for free like beads, yarn, ribbon, charms, etc. But you can also get electronics, books, and clothing, too. And Coke rewards point and box tops for education are other popular listings.

When you first signup, they give you some free credits. Besides getting credits from selling items, they also give out free credits daily when you share an item's auction on Facebook or Twitter. They also send emails with special offers like list an item today and get extra credits. Or you can do special offers from Trialpay, RadiumOne, or Paymentwall, like signing up for the Disney DVD Club, worth 11,500 credits, or downloading a new Android/iPhone app, worth 1,000 credits. Lastly, you can get credits by actually buying them, at roughly 25 - 33 cents per credit (1,500 for $5 to 16,000 for $40). Most of your credits will come from selling things though.

I'm not sure how much Listia makes from people buying credits, but you'll also find sponsored links (ads) on the site, too. They do not take a cut when you sell anything, unless you use the Get It Now feature, which has additional credit fees.

I keep trying to win Lego sets but I keep being outbid. With that said, I have gotten a Listia t-shirt and a few other items. I'm currently sitting on 25,000-ish credits from the sale of 23 items  and not trying that hard to get anything. I bid low in the hopes that something will go cheap and it never does. The items I've sold include a Wii game for 10,000 credits, coupons for free hair color for 2-3,000 credits, and an R2-D2 Lego poster I got for free with purchase for 1,800. You'll find that while the credits are purchased in the 25-33 cent range, the actual trading value is a little lower. For instance, a Lego bagged set available for $5 at Toys R Us is currently going for over 8,000 credits, and the auction isn't over yet. That just seems too high for me, which is why I'm just not buying them there.

Besides the regular auction sales, Listia does hold the occasional sponsored raffle, where you can literally get something for nothing. You can get ten free entries just for signing up for the raffle. After that, you can use credits for additional entries. I've seen some nice new TVs and laptops given away there. I try to enter all the raffles, but have never bought any additional entries besides the free ones and have never won any of them.

The buyers and sellers there have been very friendly. There is a feedback system in place and you can see how long someone has been using the site. Obviously, be wary of anyone new, from both the buying and selling side. And you can "fan" sellers so you can more easily watch what they are listing. If someone leaves you a comment of F&W on your listing, it isn't a bad thing. It means they've fanned you and are watching the auction. Also, when selling anything, the guarantees/protections the site offers are only available if you send to a confirmed shipping address.

The one feature I wish for is a way to find out how much something sold for in the past. I always use this feature on eBay to judge how much I should get for an item to see if I'm really interested in getting rid of it for that price. I may not get the exact amount, but it allows you to gauge value. Like a BowFlex I recently bartered away to someone local on Craigslist. The newer model retailed for about $1,500 but the model I owned had sold three times for $300 on eBay, so I knew I was okay trading it for something in that price range, even if the buyer might have valued it higher. (I had won it in a contest so it wasn't like I was out any cash out of pocket.) You can't see on Listia how much something last went for.

I've found Listia to be a great place to get rid of some of the smaller items I have that I'm not really interested in any more. And of course get other items that someone else isn't interested in. It isn't just used items available here. Many of the items posted are brand new, like the Lego sets I keep trying for. You can think of it as bartering in a way in that you are trading item for item, it is just that you don't yet know what the item you'll receive is after unloading your stuff.

If you join through my link in this article, you'll get 100 extra credits free and I'll get a referral bonus if/when you list your first item.

Guy Giveaways

I like entering giveaways for more guy-oriented stuff. I know most bloggers are women, but not all the prizes are specific to females. I may enter in those other giveaways for goodies for my wife, but razors, grills, gadgets, tools, or just plain laptops I find more interesting to try to win. Here are a few giveaways with prizes that are either unisex (laptops) or more male friendly.

Apologies if I get an ending date slightly wrong. I did my best to provide correct information. Please double check ending dates on respective blog sites. Also, in most cases I don't know if ending on a date means 12:00 am (start of day) or 11:59 pm (end of day).

I purposely did not list any gun giveaways, though they are out there. Winners have to physically acquire them through a licensed dealer so they are not just sent blindly.

And a literal giveaway, donate blood before end of year to the Red Cross in CT and get a free screwdriver or tripod flashlight, courtesy of Stanley Black & Decker.

Know of any more guy stuff being given away? Please share in the comments.

LEGO and K'NEX Giveaways

I ran across a few giveaways/contests for LEGO and K'NEX sets, Wii games and DVDs, too, and thought I would share. I figure if I enter enough giveaways for the same or similar prizes, I'll have a better chance of at least winning one of them.

Bummer, found a few more, but they ended recently. :(   There seems to be quite a few LEGO giveaways on YouTube. Never looked on there before. Looks like you just have to subscribe to win. I listed one above as a sample.

Of course, don't forget about our own giveaway for the Lego Technic Builder's Guide book. That one ends on 12/31/12.

Find Author's Dog, Be Character in Next Book

Author Dennis Lehane of Brookline lost his beloved dog. Apparently, she jumped a fence. If you're lucky enough to find Tessa roaming around Coolidge Corner for Dennis:
Naming of character in the next book for anyone who gets her back to us! (No, really!)
Does this count as a contest. :) No expiration date on this one. Last seen on Christmas Eve on Cambridge Street in Allston, near a Hess gas station.

Celtics Take a Shot Contest

Cumberland Farms is running a contest where you get to take a shot at winning $25,000 at a Boston Celtics game. If you live within 75 miles of Boston and have never played varsity basketball (or higher), you can embarrass yourself in an attempt to win some cash. There are ten chances to win where the winner of each chance gets four tickets to the game where you are to be the shooter, along with a team t-shirt and a hat. The earlier you enter, the more chances at winning you have. The last drawing date is 4/3/13. See the official rules for full details.

When you register for the contest, you'll get a coupon for a free coffee. Mine expires on 2/28/13.

Celtics Cowens Basketball Summer Camps

It is getting to that time of  year where you have to start picking out summer camps. The Celtics recently announced their pricing and schedule for next summer's camp with Dave Cowens. $450 a week, $15 less if you signup before March 15th. For boys and girls, aged 10-18.

While my son is just starting to be old enough for most sports camps, I suspect we'll one day send him to some kind of New England Patriots football-focused camp. Having said that, I could not find much information about any offerings there. Do they hold one? All I could find was something from Patrick Chung, which looks way too hard core, and a kicking camp from Stephen Gostkowski. The closest I could find on the Patriots' web site were some offerings through their charitable foundation, but nothing close to a summer camp.

For hockey fans, the Bruins kid summer camp schedule is out. If the season is canceled, will it still happen? Either $515 for goalies or $580 for Battle Camp. Ages 6-15 here.

The New England Revolution have player development camps over the summer. Sounds too hard core for anything I'd be interested in. We've done youth soccer at the YMCA and we're just not too interested in something so serious.

Lastly, you can't forget about the Boston Red Sox. Like the Celtics, they have a well structure baseball summer camp program offered throughout the summer. Ages 5-13 and $549 per week. Sign up for 2 or more weeks and save $50 with coupon code bossave50.

If anyone knows of any Patriots football camps actually at Foxboro/Gillette Stadium, please let me know.

Game Wirelessly! Giveaway Exp 1/7

mg button

Welcome to the Game Wirelessly! Event featuring the PlayMG Wi-Fi Gaming System

Big thank you to our host Mom to Bed by 8 and supporting co-hosts: Iowa Mom, A Medic's World and Monica’s Rants, Raves & Reviews.

Why is the MG so different from any other Wi-Fi device - from smartphones to tablets?

The MG fills a huge void currently experienced by kids and teens who either are not old enough to have their own smartphones, or whose parents have found data plans cost prohibitive. The MG isn’t just an Android device, it is a system that will mean many kids and teens will finally be able to enter the world of freemium apps, and all of the abilities that come with it, while parents can safely and affordably give it to them.

MG Topline Features:
  • Built in Wi-Fi allows entry into the unlimited world of low cost and free app gaming
  • MG Family Collaboration System: includes the "DebitSmart" Digital Wallet and "Remote Trust" notification function
  • Big 4" touchscreen encased in a sleek and sturdy "pocketable" game-centric design: rounded corners and grip provide a perfect hold on the app playing experience
  • 4GB built in memory with SD port for expandable memory ability: add SD cards and download and save as many apps as desired. (This is important-even the iTouch has a fixed memory)
  • Proprietary MG Origins Avatar System: as gamers use the MG, they gain points, customize and unlock the origin story of their own personal gaming companion
  • Preloaded games and cash credit toward game purchase
  • 1.3 Megapixel Front-Facing Camera and ability to shoot and play video
  • Stereo Headset Jack
  • Operating on ICS ; includes new Face Unlock security feature
