One way to save on school supplies is through the use of gift cards. How you might ask does using gift cards save you money? Short of winning them in giveaways, the way to save money on school supplies is to get the gift cards at a discount. Watch for sales at your favorite stores where you get a $10 gift card for $5 or $50 for $35, or whatever the savings price might be. The offers vary considerably, but paying $5 for a $10 gift card saves you 50% of the cost off the supplies. Add on some coupons and you save even more. And, if the store happens to double the coupons, all the better, as you’ll save, save, save.
To take advantage of the deal, you’ll need to do two transactions. On the way into the store, buy the gift cards first. Then, on the way out, use them. For instance, right now Shaws and Acme stores have a special where if you buy $100 of gift cards (excluding Visa, MasterCard, and American Express), they’ll give you a $10 coupon. So, on the way in, spend the $100 on the gift cards. After you pick out all the school supplies, use the coupon on the first $10 of the cost. You don’t have to use the gift cards all at once. And, you don’t have to get the gift cards just for the grocery store. You do have to use the $10 coupon there, but not necessarily the rest. And, if your credit card offers you bonus points for grocery shopping, pay for the gift cards with that to earn extra points even.
Besides talking about the deal to get a $10 coupon when you buy $100 of gift cards at our local Shaws/Acme market, we have a $100 Amazon gift card giveaway. The giveaway is open to US residents only and ends at 12:00 am Pacific Time on 7/21. Just shy of a week to enter. Good luck.
