Ghostbusters 2016 Confirmed

Ghostbusters Firehouse
The new Ghostbusters film has been confirmed for release in July 2016. This spoof trailer appearing across the internet in anticipation has been made by fans. The new installment of the Ghostbusters franchise hosts cameos from the likes of Iggy Azalea, Lindsay Lohan, Caitlyn Jenner, and Bill Murray, who famously appeared in the 1984 Ghostbusters film as one of the original Ghostbusters.

An all female cast have been chosen to lead the 2016 release which stars Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. McCarthy has become an incredibly popular choice for leading Hollywood roles since her appearance in Bridesmaids back in 2011, which was another of Feig’s films (as is Ghostbusters) and was written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. Bridesmaids surpassed its expected popularity tenfold grossing $26, 247,410 on it’s opening weekend. The film also received critical acclaim upon its release, with particularly McCarthy’s performance receiving worldwide praise from critics and fans alike. Some critics, such as Mary Elizabeth Williams of Salon went as far as to call Bridesmaids the “first black president of female-driven comedies, as the film had managed to bridge the gap between male and female led comedies by proving that women were able to be sexually and brutally honest and could pull of humor in the same way that men could.
Melissa McCarthy
There is no doubt that Paul Feig has worked out that this formula works within his movies. Since the insane popularity of Bridesmaids, both McCarthy and Wiig are incredibly popular right now, and by continuing down the same route for his next project is no surprise. Having achieved such high success with Bridesmaids however, the pressure is on for Feig to produce another box office hit. I don’t think he has a lot to worry about considering 4 years after its release, Bridesmaids is still inspiring games developers over at who have their own Bridesmaids game. There is also a massive market for Bridesmaids merchandise such as T shirts and mugs. Due to the popularity of the Ghostbusters franchise already, by combining Feig’s formula for an all-female cast and raunchy comedy with huge popularity of the existing Ghostbusters franchise then expect a worldwide, box office hit with this movie.

There is no doubt that McCarthy’s success has had an effect on Hollywood, as more and more studios now look to jump on the “all female bandwagon” and follow suit, movies such as Clueless and Mean Girls, which had strong female, comedy lead roles were often portrayed as stupid and shallow in order to draw any humor out of the situation. Bridesmaids proved that women can be equal to men in vulgarity, humor and binge drinking.
