The kit comes from Discover with Dr. Cool and retails for about $15. It has everything you need to create a live, working volcano. Basically, it has a plastic mold, plaster, some paints, eruption powder, and even a paint brush.
In addition to the parts to the volcano, you get an activity booklet (with word finds and other puzzles) and an adventure guide (with volcano facts like where the largest volcanos on earth are located). The information is aged nicely for my eight-year old. And, he should become a vulcanologist in no time if he reads these as quickly as he reads Harry Potter books.
Building up the volcano for attack is quite simple with the mold provided. The hardest part here is getting the right texture so it dries well. After you mix the plaster, if it is too thin, you need to correct yourself.
When you're done painting, that's when the real fun starts, albeit very quickly. Just add the eruption powder into the center of the model.
A pointer about creating with the volcano mold. You'll probably need to add extra water to plaster.
This is a great education toy for the kiddie in the house. Their recommended age range is 6-12. I could see it going a little higher perhaps. For the six year old side, i'd definitely recommend a bit of adult supervision. For me, I'm not sure if that was supervision or me just checking out the toy.
In addition to volcanos, Dr. Cool also offers the Ultimate Dinosaur Dig Kit, Golden Nugget Dig Kit, and a Geode Kit. That's just a few. The list goes on. Be sure to visit their site to enter to win a kit and see also the other different kits that are available.
