Have you ever wanted to add a premium sound system to your TV so that when you watch your favorite DVD or listen to your favorite music you hear better quality sound coming out of the speakers? Recently, thanks to an opportunity at Tomoson, I had the chance to try out the ZVOX SoundBase 450 Home Theater System for just such a purpose. In a nutshell, you get a box to place under your TV that has speakers and amplifiers, offering surround sound without multiple speakers, all the wires and setup. After connecting up your TV, the audio comes out of the ZVOX instead of your TV and the sound is of a much higher quality. The box itself measures in at 14.5 x 27.6 x 3.5 inches and unfortunately was too big for our family room. Instead, I tried it out in the master bedroom.
Setup of the unit was a breeze. I was easily done in under 10 minutes for the basic setup components, to get the audio to play through the home theater system. It took a little longer to get the remote going. And to sync up to my phone to play music through the unit took a little longer, too, but was simple to configure as the SoundBase is basically an aptX Bluetooth receiver. In addition to being able to connect via Bluetooth, there are two analog audio inputs, and one digital. The manufacturer provides enough cabling to use all, if you can connect to something that needs each.
The unit has a display on the front right that shows volume level, if the unit us muted, which of the connection options is currently being used, and other various audio-related levels. The numbers and digits hide themselves after a few moments of non-usage. Colorwise, the unit comes in an array of colors: black. Yes, just one. It is wood though, not plastic, so holds up well with a TV sitting on top of it. More typically though, the TV will be hanging from the wall these days.
The sound that comes out of the system is amazingly clear. My favorite part of listening through the ZVOX is the output leveling, for the times when evil commercials try to raise the output volume from more normal levels. The SoundBase will tame the loud commercials so you don't have to go reaching for that remote or running from the room.
Speaking of remotes, while the ZVOX Soundbase does come with its own remote, the idea is for you to sync the SoundBase up to your existing remote. After setup, you take the TV or cable box remote control and control the home theater system sound.Pricewise, the SoundBase sells for the low price of just $299, from Amazon or elsewhere. It comes with a 60-day home trial, money-back guarantee. Trust me though, you don't need 60 days to determine if you'll like it or not. After the first day, you should be pretty sure you'll want to keep your new toy.
