We had a full tasting menu, getting to try SEVEN different sandwiches. One of my table-mates thought we got to pick one from the menu, and get the full-size sandwich. Instead, they split each burger into quarters, and we got to try each.
My favorite of the night was the first one, their Classic Smash. The burger is your basic cheeseburger with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, pickles, onions, and their special Smash Sauce. Very moist and juicy, and tasty. Having never experienced Smashburger before, I was surprised at how thin the burger was. They come in three sizes with the mid size checking in at 4.2 ounces. Their larger size is 4.6 and the kid size is about 3 1/2 ounces if I remember correctly.
After the first burger came, the rest just kept coming one after another. After the third one, I stopped eating the whole quarter. Besides being very tasty, they were all very filling. Of course, sampling all the sides didn't help here either. The fries and haystack onions were both very small and thin. The sweet potato fries were more substantial and probably my favorite side of the night, along with the fried pickles. They offer spicy buffalo fries as a side, too, but those weren't offered on the tasting menu.
The other six sandwiches included what would probably be my wife's favorite, their BBQ Bacon & Cheddar burger. I don't typically eat mushrooms but I did try their Truffle Mushroom Swiss burger. The truffle mayo was actually pretty good. I'd never order the burger due to all the other items I liked better, but I did enjoy the sample I tried.
Each restaurant offers a burger that is specific to the region for the location. Here, the toppings have a New England flare, like the Cranberry Stilton Cheese and Cranberry sauce. I didn't think the burger's cranberry flavorings was that strong, but the included grilled onions were a nice addition.
The remaining sandwiches we got to sample included a black bean burger as their vegetarian option and a couple of chicken sandwiches. One topped with spinach, cucumber, and goat cheese, the other buffalo and blue cheese. I should have liked the buffalo sandwich best, given my love of the sauce. However, by the time the sandwich came to the table, I was overly full.
Smashburger tries to be more allergen friendly than other burger joints I've been to. They have available a gluten-free bun. The fries are prepared in beef tallow instead of a peanut oil. They're website includes a table of allergens to be aware of in their foods.
Overall a great night sampling their sandwiches and shakes. Can't wake to go back with the whole family. Don't miss signing up for their mailing list. You'll get coupons/promos sent to you. Even more reasons to stop by and visit. Enjoy.
