I like hot and spicy foods. I'm the only one in the house that does. When given the chance to try out some SalsaCrazy Habanero Salsa thanks to an opportunity at Tomoson, I couldn't pass up on the chance. The sauce is from a company that offers salsa dancing DVDs. I guess if you want the spiciness of salsa dancing without actually dancing, just eat some of the dip. I'm not one to do the dancing, so I guess this is for me. The salsa provides a nice level of heat with green chiles, serrano and red habanero chile peppers, and chipolte chile peppers. Add in some garlic, vinegar, and onion for tang, along with some red bell peppers and sugar for sweetness and you have a tasty sauce, that at least for me isn't too spicy. Way too spicy for my wife and kid but not for someone who likes really, really, really spicy foods.
A little closer look reveals the contents of the salsa a little better. One of the most visible elements of the salsa, besides the chunky tomatoes, is whole corn kernels. I'm not accustomed to this in most of the salsas I eat but it accompanies the tomatoes and peppery sauce well. Instead of just pure spice, the corn soaks up some and adds to the chunkiness of the salsa.
The salsa sells for $19.95 over at Amazon for a 16 fl. oz jar. I've seen sauces cheaper but not with the same level of heat. Free shipping with Prime membership. Now the funny part of the review. No matter how much I like the salsa, there is only so much you can eat at a time. I place the partially used jar back in the fridge between noshing. I came home from work the other day and my wife tells me she accidentally poured out the salsa in the sink. Apparently, she thought it was some left over tomato sauce that's been sitting in the fridge for weeks since the last time she used jarred sauce. The funny part... after she poured the remains down the garbage disposal, she immediately knew what she did wrong. The strong aroma from the peppers caused her to realize the errors of her ways. Oops.
Overall, a nice and spicy sauce that I'll miss since my wife poured out the rest. Will consider getting again when I want something spicy.
