Mary Lambert: Heart on My Sleeve Album Review

I participated in the Mary Lambert Heart On My Sleeve album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided a free album to review but all opinions are my own.
Mary Lambert recently released her first album Heart on My Sleeve. You may recognize her voice from the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis song Same Love. And now Mary Lambert is attacking the pop scene with her own album and first hit single Secrets.

As the name might imply, Lambert sings of her secrets. Apparently, she's bipolar, as the first line of the song states, and has a dysfunctional family, and loves her butt. Its a strong song about her struggles if you listen to the lyrics. On the musical side, the song is heavy on the piano. Definitely playful. Should do well making its rounds on the radio.

Check out her Secrets video to learn more about her music.
The Heart on My Sleeve album is made of eleven tracks, listed below.
  1. Secrets
  2. So Far Away
  3. Rib Cage ft. K Flay, Angel Haze
  4. Dear One
  5. When You Sleep
  6. Chasing the Moon
  7. Jessie's Girl
  8. Monochromatic
  9. Heart on My Sleeve
  10. Wounded Animal
  11. Sum of Our Parts
You might recognize track #7. Yes, that is a cover of the 80's song from Rick Springfield. It is an interesting cover as it isn't your typical upbeat Karaoke bar style but Lambert makes it her own and offers it accompanied by piano and violin I think. As a lesbian, Lambert wanting Jessie's Girl comes across as natural and you feel her pain. It is definitely not the more upbeat original.

The album as a whole is a mix of pop with some RnB thrown in. It is piano heavy, showing off Lambert's ability on keyboard. There is a mix of upbeat and more serious tunes. You learn all about Lambert as the album plays along, more than your typical album. Great debut album. Looking forward to see what comes next.

Order the Heart on My Sleeve album from iTunes or Amazon today.
