Sports Unlimited Rubber Horseshoe Set Review
With such great weather of late, my son and I have been spending more time playing outdoors. Sports Unlimited recently offered me the chance to review a horseshoe set similar to the one in the St. Pierre Horseshoe Set Giveaway. I had to pass as the weight of regulation horseshoes is a little heavy for a 7-year old. We did however agree on reviewing an indoor/outdoor rubber horseshoe set from Champion Sports.

The set includes your standard two pairs of shoes, each weighing a non-standard 7½ ounces (regulation max weight is 2 lbs 10 ounces). There are two pairs of poles, too. One plastic spiked set for outside use and another pair that sit in rubber mats for indoor use. First, let me say I personally can't recommend the set for indoor use, unless perhaps you've rented a really big hall with high ceilings. I can't imagine them safely being thrown around indoors. They can just do too much damage, even at 7½ ounces.
Outdoors, the set is great. You place the spikes into the ground. Instead of regulation distance, I had my son throw a shoe to see how far it would go. I then placed the second pole in at that distance. We then had fun throwing the shoes. He even hit the pole once and got really excited. My only complaint is the pole/spike isn't that sturdy or I just didn't push it into the ground far enough.

My son enjoys the game and frequently asks to play outside with it. Given the quick setup, it works out pretty well. He's also gotten a little creative with the play time with them, though has me scratching my head sometimes. I quickly discouraged his version of monkey in the middle where he wanted to go across the throwing field to stop the horseshoe. Instead, he now sometimes tries to throw twigs/branches across to hit the thrown shoe.

The rest of the friends and family enjoy, too, though we go for more of a regulation distance if no kids are involved. The nice thing is at just 7½ ounces, we don't put any divots in the ground. Overall, a great outdoor game, and lightweight enough for the kids to enjoy, too.
