Jake & Miller's Big Adventure Book Review

I was recently given the opportunity to review the Jake & Miller's Big Adventure book by Bernie Carr from Ulysses Press. I ran across the title in their catalog and I thought it would be a great opportunity for our seven year old to better understand why mommy and daddy take out the lanterns during a big storm, and, more so, why we have them in the first place. The book is subtitled A Prepper's Book for Kids and is rated for an audience of 4+.

The book is about Jake the boy and Miller the dog and how they prepare for a big backpacking adventure. Miller is all worried about running out of food, drinking safe water, and having a safe place to sleep, among other things. Jake assures him they'll take plenty of food (and a can opener), have clean water due to a filter in the bottle, and bring a tent for a place to sleep. It is all done with great illustrations from Aja Wells.

They then imagine going off exploring and discussing other areas where they need to be prepared, including flashlights with extra batteries, bug spray, a compass, and even some extra water. Blankets and a crank radio are other items of interest. In the end, their big adventure is to their back yard.

In the end, their adventure takes them to their own backyard, where they declare "We may not be going far, but we're sure ready for anything."

My son loves the book. He commented that it is too easy for him (a seven-year old) to read but he likes the story and continually turns back to the book to re-read. For a younger child,

Dad, me, likes the book, too. I find it helps kids understand that you can't wait for the last minute to do things, and, with proper planning, you can have time for an enjoyable trip. Great read, and you don't even have to be a prepper for you or your kid to enjoy.

You can pickup the book for $11.48 at Amazon (regular price $15.95).
