Hey New York! Are you ready for Nate Rocks?

Fifth grader Nathan Rockledge has been counting down the days—and meals—until his class trip to New York City. Now that the big event is finally here, he can barely stand the excitement. After all, isn’t this what being a fifth grader is all about? Oh sure, his Mom is one of the chaperones, his annoying sister Abby is tagging along, and that know-it-all classmate, Lisa, will be there as well. However, none of that matters. Not when he’ll be with his best friends, Tommy and Sam.
While seeing the sights, his teacher wants his class to take notes, but Nathan has other ideas. With paper and pencil in hand, Nathan prefers to doodle, transforming himself into Nate Rocks, boy hero. Amid ninja pigeons to fend off, aliens to attack, and the baseball game of the century to save, will Nate Rocks be able to save the day one more time?

Nate & his friends are on line waiting to get in to The Statue of Liberty:

“This is boring,” Sam whispers, as we wait in the long line to get through security.

“Boring? This isn’t boring,” Lisa interrupts. “This is awesome. It’s a part of history. Look at how magnificent she is. Can you imagine? She came across the ocean on a boat in three hundred and fifty pieces, and then they had to put her back together, and she’s been standing strong all these years. A symbol of friendship and freedom.”

“That’s not really the way it happened, you know,” Sam says softly.

“What do you mean?” Lisa asks. “Of course it is.”

Ranger Dennis continues talking in the background as we take tiny steps.

“Well, most of the story is true. The pedestal was completed here in New York, and the French did want to give the Americans a statue as a gift of friendship, but they were never able to complete it. I mean, look at how massive it is. They didn’t have the technology back then to construct anything to withstand the elements the way this statue has over the years, and do you really think they could have put together a gigantic three hundred and fifty piece 3D jigsaw puzzle? Come on. ”

“So where did this statue come from, then?” Lisa asks, hands on her hips.

“Aliens,” Sam answers flatly with a completely straight face.

“Aliens?” Tommy and I both say in unison.

Mom and Mrs. Crane both turn around to shush us.

“What are you talking about, Sam?” I whisper.

“I can’t believe you’ve never heard about this,” he whispers back. “It happened in the middle of the night in 1886. One day there was an empty pedestal, the next day, Lady Liberty was standing proudly with her torch lit. Witnesses say they saw a flying disk in the sky and a bright flash of light just before she appeared. Of course, most of the witnesses were either paid off or threatened to stay quiet, but a few slipped away and spoke up. That nonsense Ranger Dennis is telling us is completely made up.”
