GE Reveal Light Bulbs Review

GE reveal: clean, beautiful light
We've done some recent lighting upgrades in our house. This has varied from replacing fixtures to using more energy efficient light bulbs. Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) were the first energy efficient bulb we tried, but I hate that you can't just throw them away when they die due to the mercury they contain. With all the different recycling bins we already have, adding yet another for spent lightbulbs is practically a deal breaker. Lately, I've turned to LED or light–emitting diode bulbs for a replacement for the incandescent bulbs that have been phased out. And thanks to getting a GE reveal® light bulbs free of charge from GE Lighting, I recently had the opportunity to try out theirs.

I chose to replace the bulb in one of lamps on a nightstand in a bedroom. Above is the before picture with the incandescent bulb. Below is the after with the LED bulb.

Both bulbs in the pictures are said to produce the equivalent of 60 watts. In the case of the LED bulb, the equivalent of 60 watts is produced with only 11 watts. 11/60 is 81.6% more energy efficient. As far as brightness goes, a 60 watt bulb produces 800 lumens while the GE bulb is rated for 570 lumens. As I think the pictures show, the LED bulb seems to produce a brighter glow in the room, even with the fewer lumens. The lamp was the only lighting on in the room and the pictures were taken in the middle of the night, so there is no light coming from outside either.

Good lighting is important in our home environment. The warm up time of a CFL drives my wife nuts. LED lights provide that, are dimmable, and are mercury free. While they cost a little bit more than your typical bulb, they last over 10 years, which I love, since some of our lighting fixtures are not that easy to change. Without good lighting, you can't be as creative since the poor lighting can actually be a distraction. While I won't just go out and replace all our bulbs with LEDs, as we need to replace bulbs, they've become our first choice. With Reveal, they provide us with very clean lighting.

Here's a video from GE called "GE reveal Presents: A Tastemaker Show & Tell on How Lighting Affects Their Craft" that helps show you why great lighting is important.

  2. We have been using LED lights for quite some time. I found that it was a little hard to get used to initially. Now the lights seem perfect and normal. I love the long-lasting feature very much. Bulbs seemed to get more expensive all the time before we found LED.

  3. 10 year life! I had no idea. I hate those curly q bulbs with the mercury in them and I've read that they can be a health hazard which I don't need with already bad health. I'm glad they are coming out with alternatives. I guess it would be worth the extra expense if they last that long and I like the brighter cleaner light.
