Michael Angelo's Taste & Tell Family Review and Giveaways, exp 2/2/13

I've been part of Michael Angelo's eFamily since 2006, trying out their frozen foods with friends and family all along. Their latest word-of-mouth campaign is called the Taste & Tell Family. They sent me a DVD and some coupons, both the free food kind and for $1 off. I love free food coupons, especially when their value is just shy of $10.
company logo

I like frozen Italian food, especially lasagna. Thanks to their free coupon, I recently picked up a box of Michael Angelo's meat lasagna to try. I do have to go out of my way to get this as Michael Angelo's isn't available where I usually shop. And I had to get the family size since the single serving wasn't available there. That is probably my biggest complaint about them. I want more varieties in more stores of their food. I really wanted to try their veggie lasagna, but it just wasn't an option there.

Three things they stress with their foods are family owned, natural, and small batch cooking. The family-owned highlights Michael Angelo and his mom Sara, who starred in the DVD, and how they're cooking their grandmother's recipes. Yes, there really is a Michael Angelo. His grandmother emigrated from Sicily through Ellis Island some time ago.

Boston Dangers

The perils of working near tall buildings in the winter.

Gambling in Atlantic City

Atlantic City Skyline

With all the talk of casinos coming to Massachusetts, you don't need to wait until they are here to gamble at the slots or table games. Atlantic City is just a quick ride down I-95 and Groupon has an exciting deal offering you a one-night stay for two at The Chelsea for just $79. For a Friday night stay, the cost is $99, while Saturday night is $199. The mid-week stay is over 60% off. Included with the deal are two passes to the Solarium, which offers a co-ed Jacuzzi, a sauna, and steam room. Up to two kids stay free, and you can combine up to three deals to extend your stay. The deal runs until January 24th.

If you time your trip for July, you can visit the Food & Wine Festival when in town.

Don't like New Jersey? I don't blame you. Here are two other deals available, one in St. Louis, the other in Myrtle Beach.

Lakeshore Learning Science Fair 1/19

If you have little ones and are into educational toys, this Saturday the 19th at your local Lakeshore Learning Store, they are having a Science Fair from 11 am to 3 pm. Lots of hands-on activities and experiments for the kiddies. They actually have stores in 26 states, so be sure to check for one nearby. Massachusetts stores are in Newton and Saugus.

Here is a coupon, too, for you: $5 off $25, $10 off $50, and $15 off $75 purchases. Make a purchase, and you'll get free Science software, too.

Did you know they had three outlet stores (Towson, MD, Carson, CA, and San Leandro, CA)? Would love if one were nearby for the discounted merchandise.

You can celebrate with them by getting a coupon from their Facebook page to purchase 45 shrimp for $11.99. Great deal. The coupon expires tomorrow, too.

Wee Rock Eco-Friendly Rocker Giveaway, exp 2/7/13

When our little one was younger, he loved his rocking horse. These look absolutely amazing and I love their greenness. Good luck. Enter often.

wee-rock-buton

There is something so classic and timeless about a rocking horse. They are an iconic symbol of childhood that people of all generations can relate to. Whether it is sitting in a nursery or getting plenty of use in the playroom, a rocking horse can add a certain aesthetic to the room.

Wee Rock Toy Co. has put a new spin on the classic rocking horse by making them sustainable in a convenient new design. Catherine O’Sullivan and Michael Galea, founders of Wee Rock Toy Co., used their architectural training to create a classic rocking horse that has only six pieces, allowing them to be shipped flat and assembled with no tools, no glue and no hardware!

These unique rockers are crafted from bamboo plywood – an ultra high quality, renewable and child-safe material. Unlike most plywood, the bamboo plywood used by Wee Rock Toy Co. uses a soy-based adhesive that emits zero VOCs and is a responsibly sourced renewable material. The bamboo parts are simply finished with a food-grade butcher-block conditioner. A huge bonus – all of these toys are cut, finished and packaged in the United States!

In addition to being sustainably made in the USA, the Wee Rock Toy Co. rockers are adorable, and currently available in five designs, including a classic horse, gorilla, elephant, rhino and giraffe. See the designs here.

21 Dead from Molasses

Forget about modern-day terrorists. 94 years ago yesterday (1/15/1919) was the Great Molasses Flood of Boston. 21 people died when a five story high tank holding 2 million plus gallons of molasses came tumbling down in the North End. Just imagine an eight foot tall tsunami of goo coming your way.
Molasses Tank Explosion Injures 50 and Kills 11

For more information on the disaster:
Believe it or not but there are actually multiple books out the subject. Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 and The Great Molasses Flood: Boston 1919. The latter is a children's book, targeting grades 3-6.

Listen to an interview with Deborah Kops, author of The Great Molasses Flood, on NPR's Here and Now with Sacha Pfeiffer.

Just think what they could do for the 100th anniversary of the flood.

If you think that was bad, London had a Beer Flood in 1814 that killed 9 people.

Donors Choose Review

Recently, my son's teacher asked the parents of her students for some school supplies. Minor things like glue sticks and crayons for instance. I happened to have some in my stash which I had picked up for free with coupons at back to school time. Thanks Target and Rose Art. So I sent them in and she was grateful. But, what do teacher's do when they want, or just need, bigger items that don't fit into the school budget for whatever reason? Even if parents were willing to fund, many schools have placed  limits on gifts you can give teachers to prevent the appearance of favoritism. That's where sites like DonorsChoose.org come into play.

At DonorsChoose, their motto is Teacher's Ask, You Choose. Basically, teachers register at their site and request items for the classroom. People like you or I can then go to their site and pick which projects to fund. You can choose based upon location, grade level, or subject, along with some other criteria. You don't have to fund the whole project. They pool the donations from everyone such that lots of little donations can be made to fund a really expensive project (or even a less expensive one, you just don't need as many little donations).

Give to Public Schools in Need! - Go to DonorsChoose.org
The types of projects they fund are incredibly varied. You can fund one time things like an author coming to a classroom, or something that will get reused year to year like a new projector. Personally, I like the projects where the items are reusable beyond just the current students.

One thing I like about the site is the feedback you get from the teachers, both while the project is being funded and afterwards. For one particular project I helped fund, I was actually sent letters from each student. They were great to read. With the photos the teachers post, you can actually see what you helped purchase being used.

The great thing about the place is many times foundations will match donations. So if you donate $25, thanks to the foundation, the project will get $50. They let you and I decide which project they will help fund. Sometimes, the foundations will just outright fund all the projects in a particular state, like what the Claire Giannini Fund did back in 2010. They'll even email you periodically $25 "gift" cards which you can use to fund whatever you'd like. The favorite thing I ran across with them is the time they sent me four or five $25 gift cards. Not for me to use myself, but to give to other people, to introduce them to the site and let them pick what they wanted to fund. Obviously, the hope was they would come back and donate their own money, too, but that wasn't a requirement.

Beat The Winter Time Blues Giveaway, exp 2/6/13

We all need to pick up on our reading and what better way than with a $50 gift card to Amazon. I never thought about sponsoring giveaways like this when my books came out. Perhaps I'll give that a go next time around. Maybe they would have sold better... The Playing the Genetic Lottery book from Terri Morgan looks like an interesting non-fiction read.

Heinz Ketchup with Jalapeno Review

A little while back, I got an offer from Heinz to buy a special variety of ketchup they were selling, where the ketchup was blended with real jalapeno. This was a special Facebook-only offer, and not sold in stores. I like spice, and used to just love their blend with garlic, so I decided to order.

I had some McDonald's fries the other day with my McRib (they're back) and thought I'd give the jalapeno ketchup a try. The results... The ketchup tasted really good and had a decent amount of heat. I wouldn't mind a bit more heat, but it spiced things up enough so your mouth wasn't on fire, while still being able to enjoy. The ketchup didn't have a strong jalapeno taste, or aroma though. So, I'm not sure about the real jalapeno blending, but the ketchup was good. I prefer more spice, but for a jalapeno-level item, I'd rate it a good 7 or 8 out of 10. Another thing the ketchup is good on is cheeseburgers. I use a pepper-jack cheese on my burgers and the combination of the two really ups the heat versus just one of the items alone.

Given how much ketchup you put on your food, you really don't want a condiment that much spicier. When I'm looking for more heat, I go for Chelsea Wicked Hot Sauce. They're based right out of Chelsea,  Mass. I keep running across them at local craft fairs and always pickup a bottle when I run out. Now, there is something that you really don't need more then a teaspoon of. It just wouldn't work out with something like french fries, at least not as a replacement for the typical amount of ketchup one would use.

If this were available in stores, I would get again. I definitely preferred their older, no longer available garlic variety ketchup, but since that isn't available, jalapenos it is.

In the market for some extra copy paper or photo paper? Staples has both available for free after easy rebate when combined with coupons they are offering online.
