When a Severe Weather Alert is issued by the National Weather Service, the blue screen will change to a Red screen alerting you of approaching severe weather. Here is sample alert from the National Weather Service, this is how your radio will sound when the alert is activated:

NOAA Weather Radio

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is responsible for transmitting the alerts for which this radio receives. Once an alert is broadcast this radio goes into action by displaying the bright red screen and alert light on top, and then broadcasting the alert. Here are a few of the alerts that will activate this radio.
