License to Spill Hits Boston

My six year old son has a new girlfriend. Her name is Taniya Nayak. We had the opportunity to meet this HGTV designer/host at The Home Show in Foxboro this past weekend, at Patriot Place. The show had its share of freebies (like energy efficient light bulbs) and lots of giveaways along with plenty of folks pitching their latest home improvement options. I never found out who was giving away the balloons, but I easily entered $100,000 worth of contests for windows, insulation, and kitchenware, among many other things.

We found Taniya at the Mohawk License to Spill booth where she was their spokesperson. And she got to hear my son's impression of Robert Irvine. My wife and son watch Restaurant Impossible regularly and he couldn't wait to get to the show to meet her since she is a regular designer on the show. He was a little shy at first, but after Taniya did her impression of Robert, my son got more comfortable and did his.

I got to meet her, too. Very friendly. Amazing how she got her start with HGTV thanks to a Craigslist ad.
Making a Mess for the Mohawk Carpet Showdown
At the booth, they were giving away 6" x 6" squares of carpet for a Carpet Showdown. You got to spill chocolate, grape juice, and some kind of red liquid and then you got to clean it. With straight water and no harsh chemicals. Just rub it out. My son was an expert at making the mess. And he did a good job cleaning it, too. More on his cleaning efforts, shortly. I'm not sure who is worse at spilling drinks on the family room carpet, my son or me. I might have lots of small spills but my son's spillage tends to be more epic. With a Mohawk carpet using SmartStrand tech, you have less to worry about. And if something were to spill, it would come out with great ease. And, you can keep spilling (and cleaning up) without worrying about the stain guard coming off/wearing out.

The carpet cleans so easily due to its SmartStrand technology. According to the Mohawk website:
SmartStrand is the ONLY carpet with built-in stain and soil resistance that will NEVER wear or wash off.
  • Superior durability and softness for peace of mind and comfort
  • Lifetime stain and soil resistance that's built in, not sprayed on
  • Protection that will never wear or wash off like other carpets
  • Easy to clean with water or mild detergent
  • Environmentally friendly, because it's made in part from renewable resources
That last dot point is interesting as I learned more about their carpets. The carpet is actually made up of 37% renewable resources, not your typical petroleum-based materials in your normal carpets. That renewable resource is corn. Yes, that stuff that comes off the cob, typically from Iowa, though we didn't specifically cover where Mohawk's corn comes from. For every seven square yards of 40-ounce carpet produced, the manufacturer saves the equivalent to one gallon of gasoline.
JD Roberto Filming The Better Show
In addition to Taniya Nayak being at the booth, the host of The Better Show was there, too, JD RobertoThe Better Show is a show about cooking, lifestyles, home, and design among other topics. JD and my son recorded an impromptu bit for his show while we were there. After heavily dirtying the carpet, my son was set on cleaning every last bit of, I think, fruit punch. JD then tried to convince my son that he should get an allowance for all the hard work and help he can provide. Now we need to watch the show next week to see what didn't make it to the cutting room floor (or bit bucket now that nearly everything is digital).
Baked Beans Adventures at Mohawk License to Spill
The last station at the show was my biggest disappointment. Not because anything went wrong. No. Chef Ben Lacey of Tastings Wine Bar and Bistro created some delicious-looking Boston baked beans. For some reason, I got it stuck in my head that the purpose of the beans was to make a mess on the carpet, not to eat them. This was a mistaken belief. I mean this is supposed to be stain resistant carpet. It would have been fun to make a messier stain.
Enter to Win a Mohawk Carpet
I never did mention the first thing we ran across at the booth, besides Taniya that is. Mohawk is giving away a 6' x 9' area rug. Just fill out the form on the iPad and you'll be all set. I don't know if it is one winner across all the stops or a separate winner for each city. I'm hoping its the latter. You, too, can enter to win, even if you didn't go to the show.

For a more interesting use of the carpet and to demonstrate the SmartStrand technology under a bit less controlled environment, you absolutely have to see this video where they put the carpet up against a rhino. No joke. And the carpet wins. Its Ricko the Rhino and his version of the SmartStrand Challenge.

The Home Show in Boston/Foxboro was the first stop of six for the License to Spill tour. After Boston, you can catch Mohawk in Hilton Head on April 6th at the Seafood Festival, Atlanta on April 20th at the Dogwood Festival, Chicago on May 4th at the Chocolate Festival, Philadelphia on May 18th at the Italian Market Festival, before finishing up in Westchester, NY at the Burger and Beer Bash (renamed Wine and Food Weekend).

  1. How fun! Did they say when he would be on TV?

    1. Next Friday supposedly. I have Tivo setup to just tape away and I'll scan in case it is a different day.
