First Impressions: Crowdtap

I signed up for crowdtap today. If you're not familiar with them, their manta is "Give Insight. Be Influential. Get Rewarded". It is kind of like a cross between a survey site and BzzAgent, or maybe just another attempt at being like BzzAgent. I'm still trying to figure the place out a little...

After setting up your account, you basically answer single question surveys they call Quick Hits. Based upon your answers they determine future questions and possible opportunities for you in the form of Missions and Actions. For everything you do, you get points and these points can be turned into Rewards you can redeem in the form of gift cards or t-shirts or what not...

Apparently, their servers are over capacity as I kept getting a Tapped Out message when trying to do things. But if the redeem store were working, you'd see you can turn those reward points into Amazon gift cards, a crowdtap t-shirt, and other items.

With regards to the Quick Hits, some questions ask about your knowledge of specific products while others deal more with better targeting you demographically. Point values vary based upon how narrow an audience the question is for. You may be asked to watch a video based upon your answers to earn additional reward points. Other questions ask you to share an advertisement, like this video to discourage texting and driving. Get five folks to watch and you've completed your challenge.

The first action I completed had to do with answering a question about a recent episode of Top Chef. You had to write down something that was said during the show, take a picture of what you wrote, and upload the picture. Simple enough. I just had to rewatch parts of the show since I had just watched it via my Tivo and it was still around. Otherwise, it would have been on-demand from the cable company.

One of the actions I qualified for is a Microsoft Windows8 Party from Verizon. If selected, I'll get a Party Handbook, an Active Windows Phone 8X by HTC, an AmEx Gift Card, and three Verizon Swagbags with prizes for the winners of a Pinterest Challenge. I'm really curious if the phone must be returned. I'm going to try to figure out how to do the party virtually, perhaps with the help of some YouTube videos showing off the features. Then, give you the Pinterest Challenge to try to win the swag. Wish me luck.
Verizon Insider Backpack
With everything I did on the first day, answering all the Quick Hit questions, and a few missions/actions, I have 6,250 points. To get a gauge of how I'm doing compared to others, they show a leader board with the top point holders. The leader has 2,710,980. I guess I have a little way to go to catch up. Supposedly, I can get points for sampling products and participating in discussions. No samples were available nor could I find any discussions to comment on. So, no points there for now.

There is also some kind of charity connection. You pick your favorite charity from their preselected list of twelve. There is a thirteenth available, too,  if you don't select any, which is basically to share evenly across the twelve. Some of the twelve are Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (my selection), the American Red Cross, and the ASPCA, among several others. I'm still trying to understand the charity connection but it looks like there is a monthly charity auction and you can donate your points to the charity as one of the rewards, too.

To help you encourage your friends to join, they also offer buttons to add to your blog. Get three to try them out and you have completed the Promoter mission and get 1,000 points.
Girls125x125 Generic125x125 Guys125x125
Overall, not a bad first impression. I'll have to see how frequently they ask new Quick Hit questions and offer additional opportunities. I've been with BzzAgent since the beginning and the campaigns offered there seem to be happening less often lately. Don't know if that will happen here, too, or what. Still to see.

Do You Gofobo? Free Warm Bodies Screening 1/9/13

In Revere on January 9th at 7 pm, there is a screening of the movie Warm Bodies, starring Teresa Palmer and Nicholas Hoult. Is the zombie apocalypse upon us? Or did the end of the Mayan calendar kill off that fantasy? Sign in at Gofobo to get your passes.

Summary:
A funny new twist on a classic love story, WARM BODIES is a poignant tale about the power of human connection. After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human – setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world.

If you enter in the promo code Royal, you'll have a chance to win two VIP admission tickets, treats from Prince Charles's organic farm, and lunch on them at any MFA restaurant.

Robert Harrop Figurines Giveaway, exp 1/31

My wife loves the dog figurines from Robert Harrop. Their Doggie People collection offers dogs doing people-like roles like playing football (its a British company so they play football there, not soccer... :), riding horses, in full military regalia, and as firemen, among many other tasks. The figurines are breed specific, so their Newfoundland is a seaman while their Labrador has a sporting gun, is a World War I officer, or is a golfer.

In addition to their Doggie People collection, they also offer other collections like Beano & Dandy and Camberwick Green.

Each month, they hold a giveaway and this month is no different. The January prize is a French Bulldog in an old fashion racing car. You don't have to be UK based to win. Just put in zip code where the form says Postcode.

In addition to the giveaway, they happen to be holding a 20% off sale through January 13th. So check out their offerings, either for yourself or that missed holiday present. When pricing items, to see costs in dollars, be sure to use their Currency Selection pull down.

If you like them, you can subscribe to their YouTube channel, like them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter. Of the three, you really only need the Facebook one.

Disclosure: No compensation was received for this post. See my disclosure policy for more information.

Who would't love a $250 Bluetooth-capable watch. Bluetooth on a watch you may ask? Well, yes. You pair your watch with your phone and it acts as a microphone, with a directional personal speaker so you don't have to wear a headset. It supposedly offers two hours of talk time and 7 days of standby before you have to recharge it with your USB cable or power adapter.

The Martian watch is being revealed at the upcoming Computer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas and then there is a giveaway that ends on January 14th, where someone in the US, 18+ can win. All you have to do is Like their page and give them your email to enter. See the official rules for details.

Film Metro Offers On The Road Movie Screening

Monday, January 14th there is a Boston screening for the R-rated movie On The Road. Showing at the AMC Boston Common on Tremont at 7 pm, you can still reserve your tickets.

Here is a movie synopsis from the Film Metro site to help you see if you are interested:
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles and based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac, ON THE ROAD tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Traveling cross-country, Sal and Dean venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” -- the pure essence of experience. Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women -- Bull (Viggo Mortensen), Camille (Kirsten Dunst), Carlo (Tom Sturridge), Jane (Amy Adams), Terry (Alice Braga), Galatéa (Elisabeth Moss) – each impacting their journey indelibly.
They also have screenings for Hyde Park on Hudson and Promised Land. However, those two aren't being screen in the Boston area. Instead, they have screenings in Florida.

Lamb Jam Boston 2013

I've never heard of this before but I think I just might have to go, the 2013 Boston Lamb Jam. 18 area chefs (12 Boston area, 3 Providence, and 3 Portland) will serve their best lamb dishes. They'll also have local breweries represented and wine to boot. I'm not a big fan of the local wines so I'm hoping those are not local, but perhaps they can change my mind, if they are.

The show is February 17th, 2013 from 3-6 pm at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge. Tickets are $50 through the end of the year (today) and $60 thereafter. Buy four tickets today and get a free t-shirt, too. There is even a $75 pre-party VIP hour ticket option. Due to the alcohol offered, the show is a 21 and over only event.

I couldn't find any Yelp reviews for the Boston show, but the San Francisco lamb show reviews were informative.

Here is a butcher demo from last year, breaking down a whole lamb.

While I've seen chicken, cow, and goat broken down, I don't think I've ever seen lamb before. So tasty.

Somewhat related...

The folks at BostonChefs.com are offering a two week pass to HealthWorks Fitness Centers for Women. Locations are in the Back Bay, Coolidge Corner, Chestnut Hill, and Cambridge.

And, if you sign up for their e-licious newsletter, you'll be entered to win two tickets to a City Wine tour.

RoboForm Review

I've been a sweepstaker for years now. I feel like I've almost always done it, entering contests nearly everywhere I see a form to fill out, offline as well as online. In 2006, I starting doing it on a more serious level, or at least started tracking my wins for the first time. I've never won a car nor a trip, nor the HGTV Dream House, maybe 2013 for that last one since it just started again, but I have gotten some decent wins. Value wise, my biggest win was a Bowflex from the NFL Network. Usage wise, I've gotten the most usage from a Sony camera I got back in 2007. Well, technically, I won a PlayStation, but I traded that for the camera. The art of the trade for all those items I really didn't want but won after I entered anyways (or I won lesser prize than desired). Plenty of gifts to go around, too, for birthdays and Christmas. And lots of useless digital wallpaper, too.

The slowest part of entering sweepstakes, apart from finding the right ones (thanks Sweepstakes Advantage), is entering in your contact information. While I'm a very quick typist and the auto fill feature of browsers has gotten better, I've been a user of RoboForm for years to more quickly fill out sweeping forms accurately, and for remembering passwords. Lately, RoboForm has been most often discussed as a secure way to simplify web site logins. You remember the one password for RoboForm, and then RoboForm fills in the site login information when you're on the appropriate site. You don't have to remember your username and password for individual sites and you can use really strong passwords, perhaps randomly generated by RoboForm, without fear of forgetting them. No more using the same password on multiple sites with something like that.

On top of the password login feature, RoboForm is, as its name may imply, an automatic way to fill out forms, and not just login forms. With just a touch of a toolbar button, your name, address, and phone number are all filled out for you, almost always in the right places. And, that is where RoboForm shines better than a browser's auto fill component. It will fill out more forms more accurately in more places than your favorite browser's auto fill feature. And, that allows you to enter in more sweepstakes more quickly, in the hopes of winning more prizes. Which is exactly why I've been using it for so many years.

If you frequently use public computers, there is also RoboForm2Go. This runs RoboForm directly from a USB thumb drive. Meaning all your contacts, passwords, and bookmarks travel with you on the USB drive, and there is nothing to install once you get to the public system. If instead you just happen to use multiple computers, all of which are yours and aren't public (laptop/desktop, home/work), RoboForm also has a Automatic Sync feature which keeps the retained passwords in sync across multiple machines. Add a new site on one machine and the next time the other computer syncs up, RoboForm will copy over the new information saved off from the other system. You'll occasionally be asked to deal with sync issues like if you happen to add a new site to both systems, but they're easy to deal with.  It uses AES 256 for military grade encryption of your password data, and keeps a backup of your data online.

RoboForm is free to try for 30 days. Then if you like it, the cost is $19.95 for a one year subscription, with a current special of $9.95. This covers all your systems, not just one. It is dubbed RoboForm Everywhere and runs on Windows, Mac, and mobile (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry). Hmm, perhaps it is time to give the mobile version a try. Never thought about that. Definitely worth a try. Browser-wise, it works with IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. For Linux users, there is a Firefox extension you can use, as there is not a native installer.

Whenever I get a new machine, RoboForm is one of the first things I install on it. If you've never tried it, give it a go, especially with the 30-day trial available. You won't be disappointed and may have a new best friend.

Here's a demo that shows how this award-winning tool works:

Free Ringling Bros. Circus Ticket (No Expiration)

I don't remember where I first heard about this but in case you don't know, you can get a free ticket to the circus for your newborn. You don't have to go to the circus when they are a newborn, but if you contact Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey in the first year after their birth, they'll send you a certificate to use later to take the child to their first circus. The Baby Program FAQ explains all the details. This works for adoptions, too, regardless of age at adoption, as long as ticket request comes in first year after adoption. If you have multiples, check for any special handling. See the Tour Map for when they'll be in your area. No plans for Boston at this time, though I don't know if I remember where I put our certificate.
